Antenatal Clinics

Antenatal clinics with the community midwife are held at the children’s centre. The antenatal department will inform us of your pregnancy. Maternity: If you would like to have your baby at Hillingdon Hospital, you can now do a self -referral. This will speed up your access to maternity. It also means that you do not need to routinely see a GP when you find out that you are pregnant – unless you have any specific concerns.

Ear Wax

If ear wax is not causing problems it is best left alone. The ear is self-cleaning and the wax should clear naturally.

You only need to remove earwax if it is causing symptoms such as dulled hearing. Earwax may also need to be removed for fitting of a hearing aid, or if a doctor or nurse needs to examine your eardrum.

Ear Drops

Ear drops alone will often clear a plug of wax. You can buy drops from pharmacies. For example olive oil, almond oil and sodium bicarbonate drops are commonly used for this purpose. Warm the drops to room temperature (leave the bottle stand in the room for about half an hour).                                                                                                                             To put in drops, lie on one side with the affected ear uppermost. Drop four or five ear drops into the ear and leave in place for 10 minutes. You should remain lying on your side during this time, do not use cotton wool to “plug” the ear. The drops should be used twice a day for a minimum of 14 days. Very rarely, the drops may cause discomfort, burning, itching. If this happens, stop using drops and seek advice from the practice.

Ear Microsuction

This is now being provided privately by a growing number of local clinics. In this procedure the ear is viewed by a microscope which magnifies the ear making it easier to assess and treat. A suction device is used to clean out the ear without the use of water. We cannot recommend any particular clinic and we do advise you to check the qualifications of the clinicians offering this service before proceeding.

Ear Irrigation (syringing)

We are still providing this service at Southcote in certain cases. You must use ear drops for 2 weeks prior to booking an appointment for ear irrigation. Ear drops alone have a good chance of clearing the blockage. They also make the procedure safer by softening the wax.

We also require you to read the leaflet which describes the procedure and associated risks. Please fill out the consent form below and bring it with you to your appointment. We cannot do the procedure without a signed consent.
